Instructions & Guidelines

Please remember that the deadline for submitting your complete application is April 5th, 2010. Incomplete applications and applications received after the deadline will not be considered. All complete applications must be written in English and include the following:

Application Form
The application form will ask for general contact information, biographical information and information on your education.

Curriculum Vitae or Resume (2 pages maximum)
You will be asked to upload your CV/resume to our system. Check your CV or resume to make sure that it is current and complete. Also make sure that the file size does not exceed 500 KB.

Official University Transcript
You will be asked to upload an official university transcript listing all courses taken with grades. The transcript must be stamped or signed by the institution. Please note that your minimum grade average should be a 7. Please upload a scanned copy of your transcript in PDF format (If you are unsure how to do this, the best way is to find someone who can help you. Alternatively, there are plenty of resources online with instructions on how to do this, for example http://tinyurl.com/aj32wm.)

Personal Statement (400 words maximum)
The purpose of this personal statement is for you to convey a sense of who you are beyond your accomplishments and to explain your motivations for applying to the fellowship. Please discuss the kinds of personal experiences that have inspired your commitment to human rights and social justice. Please also address the reasons for applying to the summer fellowship programs, and explain how the HIA fellowship could help you realize some of your personal and professional aspirations.

Application Essay (600 words maximum)
For your application essay, you have the option of addressing either of the following topics (but not both):

1. How Do I See the Future of BiH? In the essay, please explain your views on the current social or political challenges in BiH society with respect to human rights. Offer some possible solutions to the existing dilemmas and explain how you might contribute to those changes.

2. Mock Project Proposal Imagine the city council of your town will subsidize local human rights and minority rights projects for up to 500 Euro each. In no more than 600 words, please write a project proposal that you would be able to execute by yourself or with others. Formulate a problem pertaining to human and minority rights that you perceive in your community, and explain how your project can contribute to solving the problem.

References
HIA requests the names and contact information of two references. Your references should be people who know you well enough, in a professional or academic setting, to speak honestly and effectively about your interests and abilities as they relate to the program goals.

Please note that HIA no longer requires letters of recommendation from your two references. However, we may choose to contact your references during the review process.
