2010 Internship Program in San Francisco: Grassroots Action and Civic Engagement

Humanity in Action is pleased to invite HIA Fellows from the United States and Europe to apply for the 2010 HIA Fellowship in San Francisco.

About the Fellowship

The Fellowship will run from August 29, 2010 until December 17, 2010. Up to 12 HIA Fellows and Senior Fellows will be able to participate in this program.

In this program, HIA will place you at leading, innovative NGOs and civic institutions in the Bay Area, where you will work four days a week and gain professional experience working on HIA issues at the grassroots level.

You will also participate in seminars and site visits one day a week, focusing on themes such as:

• Minority activism in the Bay Area
• Philanthropy and volunteerism
• The free speech movement
• Environmental justice
• Social entrepreneurship in Silicon Valley

The HIA Fellowship in San Francisco is made possible by the generous sponsorship of the Richard and Rhoda Goldman Fund.

Who can apply?

HIA Fellows and Senior Fellows from the United States and Europe are eligible to apply for participation in this program. However, if you are not a US citizen, do not have a US passport or do not currently have a visa that will allow to you to be in the US for the duration of this program, you are only able to apply if you are a current student or a recent graduate (you must have graduated from university or graduate school within the past year). Applicants also must have completed their HIA Action Project or demonstrated progress in the planning stages of their project idea.

Please note that the application for the 2010 San Francisco Fellowship is now currently open to HIA Fellows participating in the 2010 summer fellowship programs. Applications for Senior Fellows from previous years are now closed.

Application Deadline

Applications from 2010 HIA Fellows must be submitted before June 26, 2010. You will be notified by July 8, 2010.

Applicants from past HIA programs will be notified by June 25, 2010.

In past years, Senior Fellows in the San Francisco program participated in internships at leading organizations in the Bay Area, such as:

• African Immigrant and Refugee Resource Center
• San Francisco LGBT Community Center
• Green for All
• Jewish Community Relations Council
• United Religions Initiative
• Office of the Mayor of San Francisco
• Project Homeless Connect
• Center on Juvenile and Criminal Justice
• ACLU of Northern California

HIA will do its best to tailor the work placements to the professional interests and experience of participating Fellows and Senior Fellows.

Costs

To help ensure that this opportunity is accessible to all, HIA is pleased to announce that each participant will receive a one-time stipend of $2,500 for housing and living expenses.
