Project Civis

Article

Project Civis is a digital learning tool that can facilitate familiarization and practice for the U.S. naturalization exam through online mock interviews for immigrants seeking to become U.S. citizens.

This project will be dedicated to creating an online learning tool for those seeking U.S. citizenship. The main target will be non-native English speaking community members applying for U.S. citizenship.

The learning tool will consider the cultural context of the first users, as they will be predominantly Spanish speakers from Latin America based in New York City. They will be heavily involved in feedback sessions. There are currently 30-40 project beneficiaries, the size of the civics classroom at Make the Road New York. The tool will be accessible to anyone with internet access.

The objective of the learning tool is to build confidence, improve English language proficiency, and provide accurate feedback.

The objective of the learning tool is to build confidence, improve English language proficiency, and provide accurate feedback to ensure the U.S. naturalization exam is no longer seen as a deterrent to applying for citizenship.

The learning platform will host seven (7) modules. The modules (i.e., English Proficiency Test, U.S. citizenship application, etc.) will be built in a similar learning style of DuoLingo. Unlimited practice will have live feedback, and the mock interview will be a simulator of the real interview experience with a running timer.

The platform will provide an explanation of the Citizenship Application Process focused on the U.S. naturalization exam, with the N-400 U.S. citizenship application, unlimited practice, and a simulation of the “Mock Interview.”

Once the tool is ready to be used by a larger audience, the goal will be to work with Make the Road New York to find partner organizations interested in the tool and use social media to reach a larger audience.
