On June 15, 2022, the Othering & Belonging Institute at UC Berkeley launched the Democracy & Belonging Forum, a transatlantic network of leaders committed to both centering the needs and concerns of marginalized groups while bridging across lines of difference to counter pernicious polarization and divisions that are too-often exploited by anti-democratic authoritarians.

Senior Landecker Fellow Christiana Bukalo and Landecker Fellow Mamobo Ogoro have been appointed as Advisory Board Members for this Forum along with nine leaders from across Europe and the US.

Through in-person and online activities, the new Forum hopes to evolve the understanding of the concepts of othering, belonging, breaking and bridging as they apply to different regions, and share practices and strategies to counter polarization and democratic erosion—all while grappling with the reality of power, privilege, and positionality in our diverse social and cultural contexts. To find more about their planned activities, visit Democracy & Belonging Forum’s website.

Christiana and Mamobo are Landecker Democracy Fellows. This fellowship, a collaboration between the Alfred Landecker Foundation and Humanity in Action, was created to strengthen a new generation of leaders whose approaches to political and social challenges can become catalysts for democratic placemaking and community building.
