Senior Fellows found and present first Polish feminist documentary film festival

As their Action Project, Senior Fellows Katarzyna Korytowska and Maya Szydłowska have initiated a powerful initiative in Poland. HER Docs Film Festival is the first documentary film festival in Poland presenting the oeuvre of womxn filmmakers. The first edition of the festival took place March 6-10, 2020 at the Kinoteka cinema in Warsaw, around International Women’s Day.

During 5 days they presented over 60 Polish and foreign documentary films, animations and video artworks from around the world, in 9 thematic sections (i.a. Art, Body, HERstory, Reinventing Tomorrow, Sex, Best of Fests, New Faces). The festival’s program included also over a dozen accompanying events, such as meetings with the filmmakers, debates, an educational program for young audiences, workshops and a music and performative event.

Apart from the documentaries that had premiered at international film festivals, visitors were also able to see the first and second films of aspiring directors and films that had not yet had a chance to break through to a wider audience (New Faces section).

As part of the 4Youth section, addressed to young audiences, they showed films that deal with climate change, conscious consumption and environmental activism (“Youth Unstoppable” by Slater Jewell-Kemker), as well as documentary films on sex education for youth (documentary series “LoveSex: Stories About Love & Sex” by Anja Kvistgaard Marott).
