Landecker Fellow Karol Wilczyński’s is the Founder of SalamLab.pl, an online platform dedicated to news about Peace and non-violent solutions, giving voice to the voiceless.
On September 16th, 2022, Salam Lab conducted the first training in the program “Empathy and Multiculturalism” for teachers from Ukraine, Russia and Poland. This project stems from Karol’s desire to to take effective action in schools to teach empathy.
This is particularly important as Poland is welcoming 1.7 million refugees from Ukraine per 38 million inhabitants. This situation reminds of Turkey and Syria: while at the beginning of the Syrian Civil War Turkey was generally welcoming refugees, it did not take long for the politics and the people to become more intolerant towards Syrian refugees. To prevent this from happening also in Poland, Karol believes that change at the microlevel is needed, and that this can occur through projects such as Salam Lab training programs.
