As the coronavirus pandemic spreads throughout Africa, Kenya’s cases grow. With little government presence, no formal water connections and home to over half a million people, Kibera relies on community-led initiatives. In The New York Times’ article “No Water! No Fear! Kenya’s Community Leaders Step Up to Coronavirus Challenge”, Senior Fellow Kennedy Odede’s, who was born and raised in Kibera, organization Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO) gets recognized for its coronavirus drive. Kennedy’s SHOFCO runs schools, clinics and a network of clean drinking water points. Efforts like these prevent the spread of the virus and shows the necessity of community-led initiatives.
