January 11, 2023 is the National Human Trafficking Awareness Day. To commemorate this important day, Senior Landecker Fellow Kris Coffield, Founder and Executive Director of Imua Alliance, took to the local news to urge legislators to assist survivors of sex trafficking.

Imua Alliance is a leader in delivering prevention education designed to counter sex trafficking and sexual violence, reaching over 10,000 students and education professionals each year. Expanding anti-trafficking education is essential to our islands’ fight against sexual servitude.

To highlight their work, Kris was invited to do a live segment on KITV News, one of Hawai’i’s major TV news stations, about a human trafficking legislation that his nonprofit, Imua Alliance, is working on this year.

Speaking with KITV News reporter Chloe Marklay, Kris spoke about the efforts being made by anti-trafficking activists ahead of the upcoming state legislative session to strengthen trafficking prevention training in schools, as well as to provide increased financial assistance for survivors of human trafficking.

Kris is one of thirty 2021-2022 Landecker Democracy Fellows. This fellowship, a collaboration between the Alfred Landecker Foundation and Humanity in Action, was created to strengthen a new generation of leaders whose approaches to political and social challenges can become catalysts for democratic placemaking and community building.
