Joan was the Director of Oral History as well as former Director of Education at the United States Holocaust Museum. For years, Joan welcomed American Fellows to the Museum for orientation before they embarked on their Fellowships in Europe. In 2021, she published a book Companions: The Strange and the Familiar, which contains so many chapters that are important to us such as those focused on teaching in the academy, visiting Sarajevo after the genocide, and women in the Holocaust.
Sadly, Joan passed away in October 2021. In 2022, Humanity in Action was honored to receive a gift of $10,000 from Joan’s estate.
