Policy Fellow

The American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia (ACLU of GA) seeks a policy fellow to advance its civil liberties and civil rights agenda. The policy fellow will provide critical research and support for the ACLU of Georgia’s policy and legislative program, with a focus on reproductive rights and voter rights. The position is primarily responsible for state legislative and executive branch policy development and research but also will be called upon to engage in advocacy efforts and cultivate partner relationships. The policy fellow will report to the Political Director.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Political Director, help to develop and implement the ACLU of Georgia’s legislative agenda, including but not limited to lobbying members of the legislature, their staff and the Governor’s office, analyzing and tracking legislation, drafting amendments and preparing and delivering written and oral testimony.
Conduct rigorous policy research and fact-finding;
Identify opportunities for policy change at the local and state level;
Draft fact-sheets, policy memos, talking points, speeches and other related materials;
Help maintain and/or expand organizational and individual partners in relevant issue areas
Support organizational spokespeople in providing expertise to policymakers, the press, and coalition partners;
Participate in legislative interim activity, attend legislative hearings and participate in policy-related workgroups, coalitions and meetings.
Contribute to other projects as needed by the organization.

Eligiblity

Must be a Humanity in Action Senior Fellow.

Qualifications

Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, research and analytical skills and the ability to explain complex policy principles in simple terms;
Particular expertise or knowledge in reproductive rights is a plus.
Basic knowledge of state and local government politics, including the the legislative process;
Ability to work independently when necessary and keep organized in a fast-paced environment, manage several projects simultaneously and adjust strategy to frequently changing demands;
Demonstrated ability to build and sustain relationships with diverse groups
Initiative, vision and ability to manage short- and long-term projects;
Ability to work long hours and commute to meetings and events throughout the state, as needed;
Strong organizational and time management skills, and attention to detail
A demonstrable commitment to civil liberties and civil rights;
Strong proficiency with the use of software platforms and high degree of comfort with multiple technology applications;
Ability to negotiate, compromise and problem solve in collaborative settings;
A demonstrated commitment to racial equity, dismantling white supremacy and incorporating a structural power analysis into their work, with knowledge and understanding of how power is manifested in matters of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, religion, ability and socio-economic circumstances.

Community Organizing Fellow

The American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia (ACLU of GA) seeks an energetic and dynamic community organizing Fellow who will help grow and develop the affiliate’s base of supporters and volunteers, with an emphasis on two of the affiliates core priorities – reproductive freedom and voter rights. The ACLU of Georgia is in a period of growth, committed to cultivating a long-term base of activists who will be instrumental in advocating for lasting change in Georgia. This position will report to the Political Director.

Primary duties and responsibilities:

Regularly communicate with volunteers to sustain and grow their involvement; this includes regular phone calls, emails, and in-person 1:1s;
Develop and/or execute creative tactics to educate, engage and mobilize ACLU members and the public to get involved in our advocacy campaigns; similarly, develop and/or execute tactics that engage elected officials to champion our issues;
Identifying opportunities for volunteer engagement, including developing and executing intentional recruitment activities;
Organize community meetings and other public education events on priority issues; this includes logistics, outreach, and helping to develop the agendas;
Coordinate with partner organizations to plan and executive community meetings/events.

Eligibility

Must be a Humanity in Action Senior Fellow and have extensive experience with and a deep understanding of the US and US Southern culture and communities.

Qualifications

Experience recruiting and working with volunteers;
Experience coordinating logistics for community events or the equivalent of;
Ability to work with a diverse population, including an older demographic (ACLU members skew middle age to retired);
Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills including active listening and public speaking ability in groups and one-on-one
Ability to travel and willingness to work irregular hours;
