Fellowship FAQs

All applications must be submitted through our specific online application form, by September 15, 2019.

Humanity in Action will contact all Detroit Fellowship applicants by late September 2019 to let them know if they have been selected as a finalist. All finalists will then be interviewed by the Humanity in Action Admissions Committee at the end of September. The Admissions Committee will announce decisions by email by October 1, 2019 at the latest.

The selection process involves two phases. During the first phase, Humanity in Action staff reads all of the applications and selects a pool of finalists for further review. During the second phase, we conduct interviews with finalists and a potential second reading of the application by Humanity in Action Senior Fellows, who form an Admissions Committee. All finalists will be interviewed by a staff member. The final selections are made based on the second phase of the application process.

Due to the nature of our selection process, we do not provide any feedback on applications.

All Humanity in Action Fellowship Programs are conducted in English.

You are eligible to apply if you have been raised in Greece or speak fluent Greek and have been living in Greece for at least five years. If you are on a short-term study exchange, you are not eligible.

Humanity in Action will help Fellows obtain any visas necessary for participation in the programs. However, it is the full responsibility of Fellows to obtain the visa on their own. Fellows must initiate the process, request supporting documentation from Humanity in Action in a timely fashion and follow through to make sure they receive their visa on time. If you require a visa for your Fellowship, you must begin the process as soon as you are placed in your program country. Humanity in Action will not be responsible for obtaining your visa for you.

The Fellowship will take place from November 15 – 24, 2019 in Detroit, Michigan. Participants must be available in-person full-time during the program.

Furthermore, you commit to a one-month period of preparation sessions leading to the 10-day program. This would involve up to 4, one-hour video conference sessions with the community partner and Fellows group to set the context and plan the engagement. 

• Participation in the 10-day program (including local transportation, and some meals during the program, entrance fees for site-visits). For Fellows who do not live in Detroit, accommodations will be provided.
• Ongoing skill-building and training opportunities in Detroit in 2019-2020 such as a grant competition and Professional Fellowship opportunities.
• Upon completion of the Fellowship, participation in a global network of leaders poised to contribute to civic society and exposure to opportunities provided by other Humanity in Action programming such as Professional Fellowships, grant competitions, study trips, international conferences, leadership roles and speaking engagements.

Fellows who do not reside in Detroit will be paired up and share a hotel room with another Fellow (with two separate beds).

Humanity in Action Fellowship programs are intense and rigorous.

Participants must be available in-person from approximately 9 am-8 pm during the ten days of programming except for the first and last day, which will end earlier. Some evenings might include an evening program, while some evening might end at 6:00 pm. The concrete information will be shared in the program booklet.

Humanity in Action covers the costs of participation in the program. We also cover the cost of local transportation within the programming and some meals.

For Fellows who do not reside in Detroit, we cover accommodation from the 15 – 24th of November.

Humanity in Action does not discriminate based on financial need and may assist Fellows in meeting some of the financial demands associated with the program, such as potential travel to Detroit or gas reimbursement.

Fellows will be responsible for financing the cost of a roundtrip from their location to Detroit. Humanity in Action has set aside travel budgets for participants from Greece and for participants with documented financial need. Instructions for requesting a travel stipend will be shared with Fellows at after they have accepted their Fellowship.
