Increasing youth's knowledge about the right to access public information

As a part of the Western Balkan Civil Society Empowerment for a Reformed Public Administration – WeBER 2.0 project, financed by the European Union, Humanity in Action Bosnia and Herzegovina will aim to increase youth’s knowledge about the right to access public information, and exercising this right in practical life through the project “Youth Accessing Public Information”.

This project contributes to increasing the knowledge of youth about the access to public information, ways to exercise this right in everyday life, and the benefits of such civic control of public institutions.

Project Activities

Workshop – 12 young people coming from across Bosnia and Herzegovina will gather to learn about public administration reform, the responsibility of public institutions to citizens, access to public information and exercising their right to public information. The purpose of the workshop is primarily education of young people as holders of civic responsibility, and to prepare them for conducting a case study in 3 municipalities of their choice. Young people will learn how to lead a focus group with their peers, how to create an online questionnaire and how to analyze the results, all with the continuous mentorship of the project team.
Case studies in 3 municipalities – participants, divided into 3 teams, will each select 1 municipality in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where they will conduct a study on the access of citizens to public information. Due to the limitations caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, teams will distribute an online questionnaire aimed for young people – citizens of selected municipalities, to get data and analysis of how much is known about the right to access public information, and how much was this right exercised by citizens and with what results in their municipalities. In addition, each team will implement two focus groups with 10 young people to encourage a deeper discussion on access to public information. During the focus groups, the teams will not only talk to young people, but will also educate them about the right to access public information and encourage them to participate in a regional civic internet campaign. The third basic case study activity is a practical attempt to exercise the right of access to public information in 3 selected municipalities. This approach combines qualitative and quantitative methods, as well as empirical research.
Recording personal stories of teams about their efforts to gain access to public information – during the practical exercise and case study, each group will record a short video about their experience, how and whether they were able to access public information, and recommendations and practices for young people to overcome an obstacle in communicating with public administration.

U periodu 30.7. - 1.8.2021. održana je prva edukativna i interaktivna radionica projekta „Mladi ostvaruju pravo pristupa javnim informacijama“koji implementiramo u sklopu projekta „Osnaživanje civilnog društva zapadnog Balkana za reformisanu javnu upravu (WeBER 2.0), koji finansira Europska unija.
