A California appeals court has issued a preliminary injunction blocking the Temecula Valley Unified School District’s policy banning the teaching of critical race theory. The court found that the district’s resolution was “unconstitutionally vague,” creating confusion among educators and restricting lessons on race and U.S. history.
The case was brought by parents, teachers, and advocacy groups represented by a legal team of Public Counsel led by Senior Fellow Amanda Mangaser Savage. The lawsuit argues that the policy violates educators’ and students’ constitutional rights to teach and learn about issues of race, equity, and systemic injustice.
The injunction represents a significant moment in ongoing national debates over classroom discussions of race and identity. The case will continue as litigation proceeds in lower court.
