'Right to resistance' does not include committing atrocities

Senior Fellow Noam Schimmel’s latest opinion piece, published by the Montreal Gazette, comments on the current situation in Israel and Palestine through the lens of international humanitarian and human rights law.

In short, Noam suggests that there is “nothing in international human rights law and international humanitarian law that allows premeditated attacks on civilians,” regardless of any larger political, economic or social aim of a collective struggle.

Additionally, Noam describes how the recent developments in the Middle East have been affecting communities globally, referring to multiple student statements inciting hatred and abuse within their university communities.

Finally, Noam concludes that the atrocities of Hamas are a “radical and total violation of the principles and moral values that inspire and ground Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms and should be rejected by all Canadians.”
