The Bosnian War and the Srebrenica Genocide 30 Years After

(Please note: The seminar will be held in Danish.)

Humanity in Action Denmark is pleased to announce our seminar for teachers, taking place in Copenhagen on October 3, 2025.

Scroll down to see detailed program of the day and how to register.

The war in Bosnia in the 1990s was a bloody conflict between the country’s ethnic groups: Serbs, Croats and Muslims. The war, which lasted over three and a half years, cost the lives of more than 100,000 people and was characterized by massacres, rapes, forced displacement, concentration camps and torture. In the town of Srebrenica, up to 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were killed in a massacre that has since been characterized as genocide.

The war and the genocide in Srebrenica are close to us in time and geography.  In this course, we will learn about what happened during the conflict, who the key players were, and what the status is now 30 years later. Along the way, we hear testimonies from Srebrenica, we meet researchers who deal with the subject and we hear from a former judge at the International War Crimes Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, who talks about the judicial settlement after the wars in the 1990s.

Participation in the course is free of charge and is organized with support from the Hermod Lannung Foundation.

This year marks 30 years since the Srebrenica genocide, the largest massacre on European soil since the Holocaust. As an organization founded on the imperative to educate about genocide, Humanity in Action is committed to ensuring that the memory of Srebrenica lives on—not only in words but in action.
