Landecker Democracy Fellow Asha Iman Veal opened an exhibition last week at the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, featuring selections from the Indigenous Woman body of work by visual artist Martine Gutierrez. This artist’s striking oeuvre masterfully subverts the usual ways that racism, colorism, sexism, transphobia, and other biases are embedded and ubiquitous in mass culture imagery. The exhibition celebration included a virtual performance by Chicago-based DJ CQQCHIFRUIT.
The eponymous exhibition Martine Gutierrez at MoCP is on view from June 3 – August 29, 2021.
