Lamija Tanović: Pioneering Leadership and Dedication to Education and Human Rights

Lamija Tanović, an accomplished atomic and nuclear physicist, has had an illustrious academic and professional career. As a Professor of Atomic and Nuclear Physics and Solid State Physics at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Sarajevo, she inspired generations of students until her retirement in December 2013. Her commitment to advancing education extends far beyond the classroom, with a longstanding dedication to reforming and improving the education system in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Between 2001 and 2004, Prof. Tanović served as the Head of the Department for International Scientific, Technical, Educational, and Cultural Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina. She previously held the position of Head of the Embassy of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Kingdom of Denmark from 1994 to 2001.

Prof. Tanović is a member of the European Academy of Sciences and has played a pivotal role in initiatives that bridge education and international cooperation. Notably, she chaired the UWC-IBO Programme, which led to the establishment of the United World College in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and founded the Education in Action Foundation in the country.

As the founder of Humanity in Action Bosnia and Herzegovina, Prof. Tanović has guided the organization with unparalleled vision and dedication. She served as the Board Chair of Humanity in Action Bosnia and Herzegovina and was a member of the Humanity in Action, Inc. Board of Directors from 2012 to 2024. Her leadership has been instrumental in shaping the organization’s mission and impact, leaving a lasting legacy in the fields of education, human rights, and international cooperation.
