Throughout modern history, there has been a radical current of marginalized communities creating maps as a way to represent themselves and their stories: from the Black Panthers sharing the needs of their neighborhoods to feminist activists in Mexico mapping the thousands of missing women to the queer community collecting their stories in interactive maps.
However, these projects are difficult to establish and maintain, requiring specialist tools and technical knowledge.
Comapping bridges this gap to make it easy for communities to run participatory mapping projects. With the support of the Landecker Fellowship, Comapping will support communities in their use of maps and data to share their wants and needs among themselves and with the wider world, pushing for change from below.
