Sistas'Collective

Article

For her Action Project, Humanity in Action Senior Fellow Sarah Robinson was inspired by her time in Atlanta during the John Lewis Fellowship. Sarah is from a small town in Germany with no other Black people or people of color (PoC) other than her father and herself. She always felt (and was) excluded from many local activities and traditions and felt very disconnected and out of place.

Sarah had no idea where to look for other people of color in order to share experiences, connect with and empower each other. When she spent time in the United States, Sarah grew more aware of what empowerment can mean and who exactly her community could be. Her Action Project addressed the gap she identified in localizing groups of Black women* and WoC in her area.

Sarah grew more aware of what empowerment means and who exactly her community could be.

The only way this was possible was by word of mouth. Every kind of initiative – from book club to political association –  was included. Sistas’Collective aims at localizing initiatives for Black women* and women* of color – if possible, ultimately for each of the 16 states in Germany.

Sarah decided to establish an online platform localizing and presenting initiatives for Black women* and women* of color (WoC).  She always wished that she could just google “where to find other people of color” in my hometown area, so she thought that realizing a platform that gives information on local groups and initiatives would be a great idea to carry out independently of her physical place and would have a much broader reach.

In the future, Sarah hopes to make more contacts and reach more initiatives so that she can add more initiatives to the site and present a more comprehensive picture of the activism and support that already exists in empowering Black women* and women* of color.
