EUTRA: European Transitions from Dictatorship to Democracy in the Late 1980s

An experiential workshop that puts the roles and responsibility of a nation's political transition in the hands of its participants.

This one-week workshop focused on the political transitions in the late 1980s in Europe and its repercussions. The program was offered in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

14 Participants from more than 10 European countries shared their experiences and discussed with eyewitnesses and experts. During the workshop the participants played a regime change simulation that is based in a fictitious country transitioning from dictatorship to democracy.

Humanity in Action Germany hosted the Forum.

A general climate of discontent and economic depression has emerged in “Allonia,” a fictitious communist country. If the status quo is maintained, public demonstrations threaten to erupt into full-scale revolution. Each of the simulation participants is assigned to one of seven distinct interest groups representing key players in the country’s stability and governance.
