On July 14, 2023, Senior Landecker Fellow Thomas Arnold is organizing a 24-hour event of philosophy out in the streets of Heidelberg, Germany.
The event titled “Project Socrates: Heidelberg Street Philosophy” is co-organized by the Universität Heidelberg, the City of Heidelberg, and Karlstorbahnhof, a local cultural hub.
The organizers want to make a new and innovative contribution to science communication and transform Heidelberg’s old town into a center of “lively argumentation culture” for two days, the official program says.
“Especially the [local] students are incredibly interested in this kind of critical, community-directed project,” Thomas shared.
Visitors can expect a colorful philosophical program: the topics will be diverse as the focus will always be on what the passers-by themselves contribute.

Thomas is one of thirty 2020-2021 Landecker Democracy Fellows. This Fellowship, a collaboration between the Alfred Landecker Foundation and Humanity in Action, was created to strengthen a new generation of leaders whose approaches to political and social challenges can become catalysts for democratic placemaking and community building.
