Did We Really Wake Up? Mistakes in the Balkans, Thoughts on Ukraine, Lessons for Europe

On Saturday, February 4, the first of three film screenings will take place at the Cultural Center Oyoun in Berlin, organized and hosted by Senior Fellow Celine Cojocar.

The film “Grbavica” by Jasmila Žbanić shows the life of single mother Esma and her daughter Sara, who live in the Grbavica neighborhood in post-war Sarajevo. Esma works hard to provide for Sara, but she cannot afford to pay her class trip. Sara’s father is said to be a fallen Bosnian soldier, which means that she could go on the trip for free, but it turns out that this is not the whole truth…

In the panel following the screening we will discuss the consequences and personal trauma that wartime sexual violence has caused in Bosnia and is causing right now in Ukraine.

Our panelists will be

  • Dr. Kateryna Busol: Ukrainian lawyer, founder of #InternationalLawTalksSenior Lecturer at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and a fellow at the Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies. She has worked on different issues of accountability and transitional justice related to the Russia-Ukraine armed conflict with UN Women, Global Survivors Fund, Global Rights Compliance as well as Ukrainian NGOs such as the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union, Media Initiative for Human Rights and Truth Hounds.
  • Dr. Nena Mocnik: researcher, educator and community worker, and particularly interested in the topics of collective traumas, identity (gender) violence, and art-based sociotherapy. She is the author of two monographs (Trauma Transmission and Sexual Violence: Reconciliation and Peacebuilding in Post-Conflict Settings, 2021) and her first book „Sexuality after War Rape: From Narrative to Embodied Research“ (Routledge 2017) was awarded Bank of Montreal Award in Women’s Studies (University of Ottawa, 2018).
