While it is legitimate to look for a political alternative in Portugal, “it is not legitimate to look for it in those who bring the worst of humanity,” introduces his recent Opinion Piece Landecker Fellow Nuno Carneiro.

In this article published by the Portuguese Observador, Nuno reflects on his recent Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camps visit and a meeting with Lidia Maksymowicz, a Holocaust survivor, whom he met at the Landecker Democracy Fellowship Action Academy in Krakow earlier in May, 2023.

Upon returning to Portugal I noticed right at the exit of the airport a political poster with the expression ‘Portugal Needs a Cleaning!’ and the faces of four well-known figures scratched in red,” Nuno describes his encounter with hatred and violence back in his home country.

It is this kind of language that reveals the worst in us and has no place in a humanistic society,” he adds, and continues to reflect on the current political situation in Portugal.

Nuno is one of thirty 2022-2023 Landecker Democracy Fellows. This fellowship, a collaboration between the Alfred Landecker Foundation and Humanity in Action, was created to strengthen a new generation of leaders whose approaches to political and social challenges can become catalysts for democratic placemaking and community building.
