Experienced public leader and feminist changemaker to guide international nonprofit at a critical global moment

April 22, 2025 — Humanity in Action is proud to announce the appointment of Azadeh “Azi” Khalili as its new Executive Director, effective today. Khalili steps into the role following a distinguished career across government, philanthropy, and social justice movements—bringing decades of experience advocating for human rights, gender equity, and systemic reform

“We are all presented with opportunities to make the world a better place,” said Bill Spencer, Chair of Humanity in Action’s Board of Directors. “Azi has consistently seized those opportunities throughout her career. She leads with empathy, listens deeply, and brings the connections and skills that will strengthen our foundation at a critical time in our history.”

Khalili most recently served as Executive Director of the New York City Commission on Gender Equity, where she worked across city agencies to advance gender inclusion and safety. Her previous roles include Deputy Commissioner for Immigrant Affairs under Mayor Michael Bloomberg and founder of HIV/AIDS Technical Assistance Project, a national public health initiative that addressed the spread of HIV among youth. A reformer at heart, Khalili has long focused on creating better conditions for marginalized communities—especially immigrants, youth, and low-wage workers.

It is possible to nurture leadership rooted in justice, empathy, and truth.

“Humanity in Action stands as a powerful reminder that it’s possible to nurture leadership rooted in justice, empathy, and truth—principles that have guided my life’s work,” said Khalili.

Born and raised in Iran by a Muslim and Jewish family, Khalili immigrated to the United States in her teens, an experience that shaped her deep commitment to inclusion and solidarity. “As a feminist, a human rights advocate, and someone shaped by migration and resistance,” she shared, “I know how vital it is to invest in bold leaders and brave spaces.”

Khalili joins Humanity in Action at a time of profound global challenges.

Khalili joins Humanity in Action at a time of profound global challenges. In a recent reflection on today’s political and social climate, she wrote:

“The chaos and disconnection in the world right now can indeed feel overwhelming…Yet we remain powerful. Our strength lies in continually reaching for connection, collaboration, coalition-building, and cross-movement solidarity.”

Humanity in Action’s Board of Directors conducted a thorough search in partnership with Koya Partners, engaging a cross-section of Senior Fellows and organizational stakeholders in the process. Spencer extended particular thanks to the Search Committee, chaired by Henry Alt-Haaker and composed of HIA alumni and board members.

The organization also expressed its deep appreciation to Talia Dubovi for her impactful leadership as Interim CEO. “Talia guided us through a pivotal transition with clarity and commitment,” Spencer said. “Thanks to her work, Humanity in Action is well-positioned for this next chapter.”

Let’s begin this new chapter together.

As Executive Director, Khalili will focus on strengthening the organization’s international fellowship programs, deepening the Senior Fellow network, and supporting the next generation of leaders working across borders to advance democracy and human rights.

Khalili added, “Let’s begin this new chapter together.”
