Bersama Collective connects artists to discuss identity, sense of belonging, and the impact of colonialism on the lived experience. Through music, theater, film, photography, and spoken word, the project heals old wounds, decolonizes the present, and works toward a shared future.
Many remain unaware of Indonesia’s complete colonial history. In The Netherlands, the Indonesian perspective on the colonial past still receives too little attention, according to Indonesian-Dutch historian Fitria Jelyta. Barsama Collective Seeks to highlight the history and continuing impact of colonialism on the present and form a community-driven future of continuous artistic exchanges. The project will produce a website, (short) documentary, photography series, spoken word album, and an interdisciplinary event (music, theater, spoken word).
