Feminism in Action

Article

Women’s rights, social and environmental justice are among the most pressing global issues of our time. But how do these challenges manifest in specific contexts, and how are they addressed by those on the front lines of activism? How do activists in Bosnia and Herzegovina tackle the violation of women’s rights, given the unique social and political landscape of the region?

These questions and many more are explored in the web booklet called Feminism in Action – Review of Feminism and gender equality in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It delves into diverse approaches taken by many B&H feminists, who work to protect women’s rights from different angles, highlighting their strategies, struggles, and the practical realities they face in fighting for justice in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Overview of the project

This project highlights the link between Women’s rights and equitable transitional justice. In discussions about creating a society that integrates all social groups equally in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Women’s rights are often given minimal attention in all official governmental debates, laws, guidelines, and crisis policies. Additionally, these policies are frequently created by men, resulting in inadequate solutions to the violation of Women’s rights and its assimilation into the policies regarding social justice and environmental transition. Consequently, many organisations and individual female activists in Bosnia and Herzegovina are addressing these issues from various perspectives to create space and raise the visibility of female voices. This project will actively promote these voices and contribute to this cause.

Project Objectives

  • Raising awareness of how Women’s rights are intertwined with all aspects of society, especially with social justice and equal environmental justice.
  • Highlighting the positive and negative sides of governmental policies, laws, and guidelines when addressing different social and environmental crises.
  • Increasing the visibility of female activists in Bosnia and Hercegovina, and emphasising the importance of their effort in building a more equitable society for everyone.
  • Empowerment of female students for their active participation in fighting against the violation of Women’s rights.

Project activities

The project’s product is a web booklet with multiple chapters addressing different aspects of Women’s rights. The first chapter discusses the overall situation of Women’s rights, highlighting the positives and negatives of current policies and laws implemented in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Other chapters feature interviews with female activists from various organisations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, such as Delila Hasanbegović from Sarajevski Otvoreni Centar (SOC), Masha Durkalić, Senior Fellow Ivana Kulić (2019 Amsterdam Fellowship), Fellow Sonja Kosanović (2020 John Lewis Fellowship) from the Center for Environment, and Edita Miftari from UN Women B&H. In addition to the web booklet, a broader audience will be engaged through a social media campaign.
