Berlin Study Trip: Populism, Nationalism and Extremist Movements in Europe

Emerging nationalist and extremist movements across Europe have evoked the need to assess its potential – and current – impact on Europe's most vulnerable populations.

Humanity in Action hosted a study trip in the fall of 2014 for students, recent graduates and young professionals interested in studying populism, nationalism and extremist movements in Europe. The program took place in Berlin and was open to Humanity in Action Senior Fellows, 2014 Fellows and Greek students and recent graduates. The trip took place from October 5 to 12, 2014.

The Project was generously supported by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF).

Group Picture Study Trip Berlin 2015

Participants of this weeklong study trip explored emerging nationalist and extremist movements in Europe as well as their impact on minority groups such as immigrants, religious minorities and other marginalized groups in contemporary Europe. The program included a mix of lectures and workshops, group discussions and site visits. Participants learned from experts and eyewitnesses as well as activists. The study trip addressed the tensions that emerge around identity issues in different national contexts and at the European level. The international setting allowed the participants to discuss in a comparative perspective and to take the knowledge and tools they gained back to their own communities.

Humanity in Action selected a total of 30 individuals to participate in the program. Fifteen participants were recruited from Greece.
