On March 3, 2023 Landecker Fellow Ayden Férdeline submitted this written input in response to the call for submissions from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) on “the relationship between human rights and technical standard-setting processes for new and emerging digital technologies.”
The purpose of this submission is to inform the forthcoming report by the OHCHR on the relationship between human rights and technical standard-setting processes, which is anticipated to be published during the UN Human Rights Council’s 53rd session in July 2023.
Technical standards can harm or enable human rights.
Drawing upon his experience with the National Democratic Institute and serving on the Council of ICANN’s Generic Names Supporting Organization, Ayden provides answers to key questions and supports them with further recommendations.
