Event on Pushbacks on the Greek-Turkish Border

On Saturday January 23rd, Landecker Democracy Fellow Iason Apostolopoulos hosted a virtual event “Pushbacks on the Greek-Turkish Border.” Iason brought together human rights activists from Greece and Italy in order to shed a light on the state-led illegal push-back activities across the sea and land borders of Greece–activities that have increased dramatically over the past 10 months. 

This event examined how human rights violations against asylum seekers are not accidents or local phenomena. Rather, they are direct results of well-designed, carefully crafted European policy. These policies create areas of invisibility, death, and lawlessness across European borders that have detrimental consequences for some of the world’s most vulnerable populations: migrants and refugees.

Iason is one of thirty Landecker Democracy Fellows. This Fellowship, a collaboration between the Alfred Landecker Foundation and Humanity in Action, was created to strengthen a new generation of leaders whose approaches to political and social challenges can become catalysts for democratic placemaking and community building.
