This Privacy Policy applies to information about you that Humanity in Action (“HIA,” “we,” “our,” “us”) may obtain when you visit www.humanityinaction.org or connect.humanityinaction.org (collectively, the “Site”). This Privacy Policy describes how we may collect, use, or share information about you; your choices regarding our use of your information; how we safeguard such information; and how you may contact us regarding our privacy practices.

Collection of Personal Information

Information You Provide

We may collect and process the following information when you interact with the Site:

  • Contact Data.  You may provide us with your contact details, such as your name, email address, phone number, website URL, or other similar information.
  • Account Information.  When signing into your account through HIA Connect or the Site you may submit a username and password, which we provide to you off the Site. Once logged in, you may provide other personal information related to your account such as a profile picture, birthdate, educational history, employment and volunteer history, and gender. You may provide third parties your personal information if you register and log into HIA Connect or the Site via third-party social media websites (e.g., Facebook).
  • Application Information. The Site, sometimes through third-party services (e.g., wufoo or Squarespace), allows you to apply to HIA Fellowships and other programs, Jobs, or Volunteer positions by providing information such as your educational background, job experiences, gender, birthdate, country of birth, country of citizenship, and other related information.
  • Fellowship and Program-Related Information. If you are a selected to be a HIA Fellow or Program Participant, you may provide us information about you when filling out forms before, during and after your Fellowship. Information you provide may include your signature, country, travel information (e.g., dates and locations of arrival), photo, bio, preferred pronoun, insurance information, and health information (e.g., dietary restrictions, allergies, medical conditions).
  • Payment Information. You may provide us payment information when donating to HIA or submitting a request for a reimbursement, stipend, or service payment through the Site. This may include your credit or debit card number, billing address, or bank account information. You may choose to provide us this information through a third-party vendor (e.g., PayPal, GiveLively, Betterplace.org, Eventbrite).
  • Private Message Content. If you have a registered account on the HIA Connect Site, you may privately message others who also have a registered account. You may email yourself a copy of private messages you send to others. While private messages are not publicly available to others and we do not actively review content contained in your private messages, be aware that if you violate our Terms of Use others may report to us or we may access the content of your private messages.
  • User-Generated Content. You may provide us information contained in user-generated content you submit through HIA Connect or to the Site such as comments and posts on HIA Connect or Site forums. Please be aware that information you post on semi-public or public parts of HIA Connect or the Site may be visible to others.
  • Information About Others. You may submit to us personal information about other individuals. For example, you may choose to dedicate your donation to someone and submit to us their name, address, and a personal message so we may send them a donation dedication acknowledgement. When you apply to HIA Fellowships, Jobs, or Volunteer positions, you may provide the contact information of your references or a recommendation letter by a reference. If you are a HIA Fellow, you may provide information related to your emergency contacts. When you submit other individuals’ personal information to us, you represent to us that you have their consent to do so.

Information Collected Automatically

In addition to information that you submit to us, we may collect certain information automatically using various tools and technologies such as cookies and web server logs. A cookie is a piece of data that a website can send to your browser, which may then be stored on your computer as an anonymous tag that identifies your computer but not you. Many web browsers are set to accept cookies by default, but you may be able to set your browser to notify you before you receive a cookie, or to remove or reject cookies. Please note that if you disable cookies, you may not be able to use certain features of the Site or other websites, and disabling cookies may invalidate opt outs that rely on cookies to function.

The types of information we collect automatically may include IP addresses, device identifiers, browser characteristics, operating system details, language preferences, referring URLs, length of visits, and pages viewed.

The Site may also use GPS (global positioning systems) software, geo-filtering, and other location-aware technologies that can locate you (sometimes precisely) for purposes such as verifying your location and delivering or restricting content based on your location. The Site may request that you turn on location technologies. You may be able to toggle on or off location technologies using your Internet browser (e.g., Google Chrome). If you disable location technologies, you may not be able to use certain features of the Site.

By using cookies and other tracking technologies, we or third parties may be able to identify you across time and across devices.

Your web browser may have settings that allow you to transmit a “Do Not Track” signal when you visit various websites or use online services. Like many websites, the Site is not designed to respond to “Do Not Track” signals received from browsers. Information Collected from Third Parties

Third-Party Services

The Site may include functionality that allows (1) certain kinds of interactions between the Site and a third-party website, platform, tool, application, or other service, and (2) access or display of third-party content via the Site. You may provide personal information to these third-party services, which in turn may share your personal information with us. For example, when you donate to HIA, you may do so through a third-party payment processor (e.g., PayPal, GiveLively).

Any personal information you submit to these third-party service providers is governed by the third-party service provider’s own privacy policy and terms and conditions, which you should review to understand how they may use or disclose your personal information. To the extent that third-party service providers share your personal information with us, that personal information is governed by this Privacy Policy.

Social Features

The Site may include features that are designed to permit interactions that you initiate between the Site and third-party websites or services, including third-party social networks (collectively, “Social Features”). For example, you may be able to “like” or “share” HIA content, tag HIA in photos or public posts, or watch an embedded video from a hosted party (e.g., YouTube). In addition, when you register for an HIA, you may have an option to use your Facebook or other account provided by a third-party website or application to facilitate the registration and log-in or transaction process on the Site, or otherwise link accounts.

When you interact with Social Features, both HIA and the third-party services that operate those Social Features may have access to certain information about you and your use of both our Site and theirs. The information we collect in connection with your use of Social Features is subject to this Privacy Policy. The information collected and stored by the third parties remains subject to those third parties’ privacy practices, including whether the third parties continue to share information with us, the types of information shared, and your choices with regard to what is visible to others on those third-party websites or services.

User-Generated Content and Account Profiles

User-Generated Content

The Site may permit you to submit messages, text, illustrations, files, images, graphics, photos, comments, responses, sounds, music, videos, information, content, ratings, reviews, data, questions, suggestions, personally identifiable information, or other information or materials and the ideas contained therein (collectively, “User-Generated Content” or “UGC”), such as through HIA Connect or through third-party providers (e.g., wufoo).  We or others may store, display, reproduce, publish, distribute or otherwise use UGC online or offline in any media or format and may or may not attribute it to you.  Others may have access to this UGC and may have the ability to share it with third parties.  If you choose to submit UGC to any public or semi-public area of the Site, your UGC will be considered “public” or “semi-public” and will be accessible by anyone if public or other HIA Connect users if “semi-public”.  Notwithstanding anything to the contrary, personal information included in UGC that is public or semi-public is not subject to HIA’s usage or sharing limitations, or other obligations, under this Privacy Policy or otherwise, and may be used and shared by HIA and third parties to the fullest extent not prohibited by applicable law.

Please think carefully before deciding what UGC, including personal information, you share through the Site that you choose to make available to others, and cannot ensure that parties who have access to such information will respect your privacy or keep it secure.  We are not responsible for the privacy or security of any information that you make publicly or semi-publicly available on HIA Connect or the Site or what others do with information you share with them on HIA Connect or the Site.  We are not responsible for the accuracy, use, or misuse of any UGC that you disclose or receive from third parties through the Site.  As permitted by applicable law, except where we have otherwise explicitly agreed, we may also publish your name, likeness, and other personal information that is part of your UGC, and we may use the content, or any portion of the content, for advertising, marketing, publicity, and promotional activities without remuneration or other obligation to you. Account Profiles

A HIA Connect user’s profile page may be, by default, set up to display information such as the user’s nickname, images, location (city/state/country), and optional information added by the user including, for example, the user’s biographic information.  We may offer users the ability to manage their public or semi-public profile and use profile preference settings as explained under “Your Choices”.  We recommend that you do not post information or content as part of your profile that you are not prepared to make public or semi-public. 

Use of Personal Information

We may use personal information we collect through the Site to:

  • Respond to your inquiries and fulfill your requests;
  • Process your Site registration and identify you as a user;
  • Contact you with information, including transactional or promotional information;
  • Record your registrations to HIA events, including whether you are on event waitlists;
  • Facilitate, manage, personalize, and improve our user, partner, and donor relationships;
  • Improve the Site and marketing or develop new services and administer and troubleshoot the Site;
  • Analyze your use of the Site and personalize and enhance your experience;
  • Comply with applicable laws, regulations, or legal process, as well as industry standards and our company policies;
  • Prevent, investigate, identify, stop, or take any other action with regard to suspected or actual fraudulent or illegal activity, or any activity that violates our policies; or
  • As otherwise stated in this Privacy Policy, our Terms of Use, or the other privacy policies or terms and conditions;
  • For any other purpose, with your consent.

Sharing of Personal Information

We may share with our affiliates, partner organizations, or donors when it is reasonably necessary or desirable, such as to help provide services to you or analyze and improve the Site.

We may permit our agents, vendors, consultants, and other service providers to access information obtained through the Site or HIA Connect to carry out work on our behalf. Our service providers use personal information that we disclose to them only for the purpose for which it was disclosed.

We also may share your information:

  • If we are required to do so by law, regulation, or legal process (such as in response to a subpoena or court order or similar government request for information);
  • To respond to requests by government agencies, including law enforcement authorities;
  • When we believe disclosure is necessary or appropriate to prevent physical harm or financial loss, or in connection with an investigation of suspected or actual illegal activity;
  • To enforce our policies, or to protect legal rights, property, or safety; or
  • With third parties, to investigate or address possible criminal or fraudulent activity.

In addition, we reserve the right to disclose any information we obtain through the Site in the event we sell or transfer all or a portion of our business or assets (e.g., further to a merger, reorganization, liquidation, or any other business transaction), including negotiations of such transactions.

Your Choices

Marketing Communications

You may opt out of marketing communications at any time by clicking the “unsubscribe” link in the body of the communication. Note that regardless of your opt-in preferences, HIA may still at times send you transactional or administrative emails.

Account Profile

HIA also provides users with the ability to access, revise, or update their information or preferences in their HIA Connect account settings. For example, you may:

  • access, add, revise, or remove your account information such as your profile picture, birthdate, educational history, and employment and volunteer history, and gender
  • change your password

The functionality and features of your account are subject to change from time-to-time so please regularly confirm the settings reflect your preferences. Changing setting options may not result in immediate changes to the settings, which are subject to our operations and maintenance schedules. 

Analytics

We use data analytics on the Service, including Google Analytics. For more information on how Google Analytics uses the data it collects through the Site, visit www.google.com/policies/privacy/partners/. To opt out of collection and use of your information for ad targeting through Facebook Analytics, visit your Facebook account settings and follow Facebook’s instructions.

Interest-Based Advertising

Certain advertisements may display an Advertising Option Icon for Interest-based Ads that links to an opt-out tool provided by the Digital Advertising Alliance (“DAA”). You may click on this icon to exercise certain choices regarding ad targeting. You can learn more about the DAA AdChoices Program at http://www.youradchoices.com/ and its opt-out program for mobile apps at http://www.aboutads.info/appchoices.

In addition, the Network Advertising Initiative (“NAI”) has developed a tool that allows consumers to opt out of certain Interest-based Ads delivered by NAI members’ ad networks. Please be aware that, even if you are able to opt out of certain kinds of Interest-based Ads, you will continue to receive non-targeted ads.  Further, opting out through one or more NAI or DAA members only means that those selected members wil stop delivering certain targeted ads to you.

HIA is not responsible for the effectiveness of any third-parties’ opt-out options or programs or the accuracy of their statements regarding their programs. 

Children’s Privacy

Our Site is not intended for, nor targeted to, children under 13, and we do not knowingly request or collect personal information from any person under 13 years of age through the Service. If we learn that we have received information directly from a child who is under the age of 13, we will delete the information in accordance with applicable law.

Connecticut Privacy Rights

Connecticut law requires any person or entity that collects Social Security numbers from Connecticut residents in the course of business to create a privacy protection policy and to publish or display it publicly.  It is our policy to protect the confidentiality of Social Security numbers in our possession from misuse and improper disclosure by maintaining and enforcing policies and physical and electronic safeguards against misuse and improper disclosure.  Unlawful disclosure of Social Security numbers is prohibited, and access to them is limited to personnel who need access to such information in order to perform their job functions. 

California Privacy Rights: Removal of Content Posted by California Minors

California residents under the age of eighteen (18) who have registered to use the Site, and who have posted content or information on the Site, can request that such information be removed from the Site by contacting us at legal@humanityinaction.org or by sending a letter, stating that they personally posted such content or information and detailing where the content or information is posted, to:

We will make reasonable good faith efforts to remove the post from prospective public view or anonymize it so the minor cannot be individually identified. However, this removal process cannot ensure complete or comprehensive deletion from the Internet. For instance, third parties may have republished the post and/or archived copies of it may be stored by search engines or other parties that we do not control.

Security

We take reasonable measures to protect your information from loss, theft, misuse, unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, and destruction. Nevertheless, transmission via the Internet and online digital storage are not completely secure and we cannot guarantee the security of your information collected through the Site.

Third-Party Content and Linked Websites

The Site may include links to other websites for your convenience and information. This Privacy Policy does not apply to those websites, which may have their own privacy policies or notices that you should review to understand how they may use or disclose your personal information. HIA is not responsible for the content or privacy practices of any linked websites that we do not control.

Information For Users Outside The United States

If you are visiting the Site from outside the United States, please be aware that information we obtain about you will be processed in the United States or in other jurisdictions. By using the Site you acknowledge and consent to the international transfer and processing of your personal information as described in this Privacy Policy. Please be aware that the data protection laws and regulations that apply to your personal information transferred to the United States or other countries may be different from the laws in your country of residence.

Humanity in Action, Inc.; Humanity in Action Danmark; Humanity in Action Deutschland e.V.; Humanity in Action Nederland; Humanosti u akciji Bosna i Hercegovina; Fundacja Humanity in Action Polska; and Humanity in Action France have a common website. This website ( the “Site”), is owned and operated by Humanity in Action, Inc. in the United States, (collectively “HIA,” “we,” “us,” “our”), which is committed to fulfilling our responsibilities under the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”) in relation to the collection, retention, use, and other processing of personal data that is obtained when EU data subjects download, use, and interact with www.humanityinaction.org and www.connect.humanityinaction.org  (collectively, the “Site”).  This Privacy Notice sets forth how we process EU personal data related to the Site in our role as a data controller (i.e., when we are responsible for determining the purpose and means of the processing).

Personal Data We Collect

We may collect and process the following information when you interact with the Site:

  • Location Information.  We may collect and use general location information (e.g., zip code) or specific location information (e.g., real-time GPS coordinates) from devices used to access the Site.
  • Payment Information. You may provide us payment information when donating to HIA or submitting a request for a reimbursement, stipend, or service payment through the Site. This may include your credit or debit card number, billing address, or bank account information. You may choose to provide us this information through a third-party vendor (e.g., PayPal).

How and Why We Use Your Personal Data

We may process personal data to:

  • Transact with you, respond to your comments, questions and requests, provide user service, send you informational notices, and contact you if we need to obtain or provide additional information;
  • Record your registrations to HIA events, including whether you are on event waitlists;
  • Facilitate, manage, personalize, and improve our user, partner, and donor relationships;
  • Prevent and address fraud, breach of policies or terms, and threats or harm;
  • Ensure the security and integrity of the personal data we process; or
  • Comply with applicable legal requirements.

Our processing of such personal data is carried out pursuant to the following legal bases:

  • The processing is necessary for us to provide you with the programing and services you are applying for, or to respond to your inquiries.
  • We have a legal obligation to process your personal data, such as to comply with applicable tax and other government regulations or to comply with a court order or binding law enforcement request.
  • To protect your vital interests, or those of others.
  • We have a legitimate interest in carrying out the processing activity.  We have a legitimate interest in the following cases:
    • To analyze and improve the safety and security of the Site.  This includes implementing and enhancing security measures and protections and protecting against fraud, spam, and abuse.
    • To maintain and improve the Site. 
    • To operate the Site and provide you with certain tailored information and communications to develop and promote our network and opportunities.
  • You have consented to the use of your personal data.  When you consent, you can change your mind at any time.  

If we make a material change to how we process your personal data, we will notify you as appropriate and may also modify this Privacy Notice.

How We May Share Your Personal Data

We may share your personal data:

  • With our affiliates, partner organizations or donors when it is reasonably necessary or desirable, such as to help provide services to you or analyze and improve the Site.
  • With our staff, agents, vendors, consultants, and other service providers who perform functions on our behalf.  For example, we may use third parties to help us provide customer support, manage our advertisements on other platforms, and send marketing and other communications on our behalf.
  • Publicly on the Site, if you apply to become an HIA Fellow and are accepted, to feature your involvement in our organization. For example, we may publish your name, position, and biographical information that may include educational background, work experience, hobbies, or character traits.
  • With other individuals such as when you dedicate a donation in an individual’s name and we send them an acknowledge your dedication to them if you provide us their name and address.
  • To abide by applicable law or protect rights and interests.  For example, we may disclose your personal data if we determine that such disclosure is reasonably necessary to comply with the law, protect our or others’ rights, property, or interests, or prevent fraud or abuse. 

How We Use Tracking Technologies

We may utilize online identification tools—such as cookies, web beacons, pixels or similar tracking technologies—in accordance with applicable law and requirements.  “Cookies” are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website; they store information which is sent back to our servers or those of third parties.  As described in more detail below, we use such technologies to:

  • Recognize new or past users;
  • Store your profile or authentication credentials if you are registered on the Site;
  • Improve the Site and to better understand your use of the Site;
  • Integrate with third-party social media websites;
  • Serve you with interest-based or targeted advertising;
  • Observe your behaviors and browsing activities over time across multiple websites or other platforms; and to
  • Better understand the interests of our Site users.

Some cookies are required for certain uses of the Site.  For example, if you choose to register an account through the Site, we will use cookies to facilitate your registration and remember your preferences.

Different types of cookies may be used for specific purposes, for example:

  • Functional cookies and cookies from third parties may be used for analysis and marketing purposes.  Functional cookies enable certain parts of the website to work properly, retain user preferences, and allow users to log in using social network user credentials.

Cookies are either “session” cookies which are deleted when you end your browser session, or “persistent,” which remain until you delete them or the party who served the cookie removes it.  Further details concerning the cookies we use on our Site are available in the table included at the bottom of this section. 

Through your device settings you may change your Site settings to disallow certain Site features, disabling certain tracking technologies. For example, turning off location tracking through your device’s settings will disable the Site’s location tracking technologies. How We Protect Your Personal Data

We maintain appropriate technical and organizational safeguards designed to help protect personal data from unauthorized disclosure or access and accidental or unlawful destruction, loss, or alteration.  Although we use reasonable efforts to safeguard personal data, we cannot guarantee the security of your information obtained through the Site.

How Long We Retain Your Personal Data

We will store your personal data for no longer than is necessary for the performance of our obligations or to achieve the purposes for which the information was collected, or as may be permitted under applicable law.  To determine the appropriate retention period, we will consider the amount, nature, and sensitivity of the data; the potential risk of harm from unauthorized use or disclosure of the data; the purposes for which we process the data and whether we can achieve those purposes through other means; and the applicable legal requirements.  Unless otherwise required by applicable law, at the end of the retention period we will remove personal data from our systems and records or take appropriate steps to properly anonymize it.

Personal Data Transfers

As required by law, we will obtain appropriate consent from EU data subjects prior to transferring their personal data out of the EU to a country that has not been deemed by the European Commission to provide an adequate level of personal data protection.  Please contact us if you have questions regarding our cross-border data transfer activities.

Your Rights and Choices

The GDPR provides EU data subjects with certain rights regarding their personal data.  Subject to certain conditions, you may ask Humanity in Action, Inc. to take the following actions in relation to your personal data that we hold:

  • Provide you with information about our processing of your personal data and give you access to your personal data.
  • Update or correct inaccuracies in your personal data.
  • Delete your personal data.
  • Transfer a machine-readable copy of your personal data to you or a third party of your choice.
  • Restrict the processing of your personal data.
  • Object to our processing of your personal data for direct marketing purposes.
  • Object to reliance on our legitimate interests as the basis for processing of your personal data.
