Hospitality Initiative (Inicjatywa Gośc-inność)

Article

Inspired to combat the offensive, negative connotations surrounding the word ‘refugee’ in Poland, Humanity in Action Senior Fellow Nina Lazarcyzk created educational cooking workshops called Hospitality Workshops (GośćInność) dedicated for youth, run by migrants and refugees, in order to bring people together.

Together with her team, Nina organized a series of educational cooking workshops. The team goes to a school and for 3 hours the classroom turns into a kitchen. The Hospitality Workshops are dedicated to Polish students aged between 12-14 years old coming from disadvantaged communities. The Hospitality Workshops are led by migrants who teach students how to prepare some of their traditional dishes. Students have the opportunity to interact with ‘Others,’ to learn through food what diversity can bring to the table.

The workshops provide an opportunity to learn not only about different cuisines, but also about the related country, habits and religion. They gave teenagers the ability to grasp such concepts as migration, migrants, refugees, asylum seekers or internally displaced persons, but most importantly they hear real stories of people not online, but offline.
