How to Fix Democracy with Anne Applebaum

Since its origins, democracy has been a work in progress. Today, many question its resilience. The Bertelsmann Foundation and Humanity in Action have teamed up with Andrew Keen, author of How to Fix the Future, to launch How to Fix Democracy: a video and podcast series exploring practical responses to the threats facing democracies around the world. Host Andrew Keen interviews prominent thinkers, writers, politicians, technologists, and business leaders who enlighten and challenge us as we seek the answers to How to Fix Democracy.

At the Bertelsmann Foundation’s Washington Symposium held in April 2019, host Andrew Keen sat down with journalist and historian Anne Applebaum to discuss the current state of democracy and its historical precedents. A thought leader on disinformation, Applebaum believes that in order to fix democracy, we need to think more critically about who gets to decide the algorithm that determines the rules of what information we receive. Comparing the contemporary social and civil unrest with the upheavals that followed the invention of the printing press, Applebaum argues that we are in an “information revolution.”
