Europe needs peace education – peace education needs Europe

Article

Professor Uli Jäger and Landecker Fellow Dr. Nicole Rieber wrote an article about digital peace education. It was recently published on European Commission’s European School Education Platform in 29 languages.

In the article titled “Europe needs peace education – peace education needs Europe,” the authors explain that “young people need help: help to be able to deal with the accompanying, often polarizing debate that will inevitably be conducted in their various countries.

Uli and Nicole further suggest that schools, as safe and respectful environments, should offer such help. Indeed, “peace itself can be made a topic: young people enjoy engaging with role models advocating peace,” the authors claim.

Finally, Uli and Nicole highlight the importance of awareness building of phenomenas such as hate speech, disinformation and conspiracy theories, increasingly spreading online. “It is more essential than ever to make people aware of such phenomena, so that they can take a stand,” they explain.

Nicole is one of thirty 2022-2023 Landecker Democracy Fellows. This fellowship, a collaboration between the Alfred Landecker Foundation and Humanity in Action, was created to strengthen a new generation of leaders whose approaches to political and social challenges can become catalysts for democratic placemaking and community building.
