Ianne Fields Stewart in NBC article for their speech at the Trans March on Broadway

On September 6th, members of the theatre community gathered for the Trans March on Broadway. The march, organized by the Next Generation Project, included a speech by Senior Fellow Ianne Fields Stewart alongside fellow actors and activists.

An article by NBC News states that the event was in response to a statement by Cameron Mackintosh, a Broadway producer claiming that “transgender casting in classic musicals is a ‘gimmick.'”

NBC also shares actors and activists statements regarding why they were marching. These issues included: “trans erasure in the industry,” to have conversations about trans people led by trans people, and this being an opportunity to bring exposure to who is in the business of Broadway. Mackintosh attempted to clarify his remarks whilst activists highlighted issues of feeling unsafe in productions.
