Nienke Venema is the director of the Democracy and Media Foundation (Stichting Democratie en Media): a foundation committed to independent journalism and a strong, vigorous and inclusive democratic state through media-ownership and proactive funding programs. Nienke participated in the New York Summer Program (2008), the Grass Root Fellowship in San Francisco (2008) and the Humanity in Action Congressional Fellowship in Washington D.C. (2009). From 2011-2014, she was the national director of Humanity in Action in The Netherlands. She holds a BA and MA in Social and Political Sciences from the University of Cambridge and an MSc in International Relations from the University of Amsterdam, where she focused on the rise of right-wing populism in Western Europe. Nienke is currently the treasurer of Stichting Daria Bukvic, the foundation behind the much acclaimed Dutch theatre show “Nobody Home”, and a member of the Advisory Board of CollAction.
