Saskia Brechenmacher is a Fellow in Carnegie’s Democracy, Conflict, and Governance Program, where her research focuses on gender, civil society, and democratic governance.
She has advised governmental and private funders on strategies to defend civic space in countries experiencing democratic backsliding. Her writing has been published in the National Interest, the Hill, New America Weekly, Open Democracy, and elsewhere.
Brechenmacher is a graduate of Carnegie’s James C. Gaither Junior Fellows Program and a 2017 Atlantik-Brücke Young Leader. She also gained experience at the World Peace Foundation in Boston, Carnegie Europe in Brussels, and the Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation in London. She received her BA in political science from Brown University and a MALD degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. She was born in Germany and has previously lived in France and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
