Humanity in Action is deeply saddened by the loss of Ambassador (ret.) Klaus Scharioth, who passed away on October 30th, 2025, after a long illness.

Klaus Scharioth’s remarkable career in diplomacy reflected his unwavering belief in the power of dialogue and cooperation. Over several decades in the German Foreign Service, he served his country with distinction among other positions as State Secretary in the Federal Foreign Office.

We first came to know Klaus when he served as Ambassador in Washington, D.C. from 2006 to 2011, and, during which he joined the International Board of Humanity in Action (HIA) ex officio. He grew close to the mission and people of HIA and his engagement with Humanity in Action continued long after his diplomatic career ended. Upon returning to Germany, he became a member of the German Board (2012-2024), remaining an active and trusted supporter of our mission to strengthen democracy, human rights, and social justice.

We will miss Klaus dearly as a mentor, thinker, friend, and supporter.

Klaus was deeply dedicated to transatlantic relations, the power of diplomacy and dialogue, to the upholding of equity and justice, and to fostering curiosity and moral courage in younger generations. His ability to find common ground in difficult discussions—anchored in empathy, intellect, and wisdom—left a lasting mark on all who had the privilege to work with him.

We will miss him dearly as a mentor, thinker, friend, and supporter. Our thoughts are with his wife, Ulrike Scharioth, and their children in this time of loss.

In honoring Klaus Scharioth’s legacy, we remember not only a distinguished diplomat but a humanist whose commitment to dialogue and understanding will continue to inspire us all.
