Food, Language, and Land-based Education in the Catawba Nation

On March 16th, Landecker Democracy Fellow and Humanity in Action Senior Fellow DeLesslin “Roo” George-Warren gave a virtual lecture for RISD’s Nature–Culture–Sustainability Studies MA program. Roo discussed the Catawba Nation’s language revitalization initiatives, food sovereignty movements, and vision to provide land-based education for tribal youth. Roo is a citizen of Catawba Nation and is a consultant for his tribe on several projects. In 2018, he was named to the “40 Under 40” list by the National Council on American Indian Enterprise Development.

DeLesslin “Roo” George-Warren is one of thirty Landecker Democracy Fellows. This Fellowship, a collaboration between the Alfred Landecker Foundation and Humanity in Action, was created to strengthen a new generation of leaders whose approaches to political and social challenges can become catalysts for democratic placemaking and community building.
