Humanity in Action launched the Racial Equity Grant in the Summer of 2020 following the emergence of one of the most powerful social movements the United States had seen in the previous fifty years. The grants sought to support the work of our community as we reckoned with past and present racial injustices and boar witness to the power of dynamic civic action in the name of critical social change and transformative promise.

The Racial Equity Grant competitons were made possible through the generous support of the William H. Donner Foundation.

In response to the heightened incidents of Antisemitism acts and speech across Europe and the United States, Humanity in Action called for projects in 2019 that aimed to provide information about historical and present-day forms of Antisemitism, prevention, creating meeting spaces between people with Jewish and non-Jewish identities, linking history and remembrance with the present, developing information and prevention campaigns (empowerment, awareness raising, story telling) as well as targeted resistance to Antisemitic statements or actions.

In light of the recent political, social and economic developments and events in the United States and Europe – an increasingly powerful discourse driven by xenophobia, nationalism and extremist views – Humanity in Action invited grant proposals from Senior Fellows for projects that do one or more of the following:

• Engage with individuals and communities that are not committed to – or indifferent to – the political processes that are the basis for a strong democracy;
• Interact with individuals and communities that are drawn to nationalist and xenophobic policies and views;
• Bridge political, cultural and societal divisions in pluralistic societies; and
• Advance Humanity in Action’s mission within the public sphere, i.e. politics, economics, culture, social justice and communication.

Humanity in Action specifically encouraged project proposals that address the above mentioned issues in the increasingly powerful world of social media as it effects individuals and societies.

From December 2015 to January 2016, Humanity in Action invited grant proposals for projects on any topic that corresponds to the mission of the organization. In addition to activities that are educational, awareness-raising, or activist in nature, Humanity in Action specifically encouraged artistic project proposals as well as collaborative applications from groups of Senior Fellows.

In the past several years, the Fundamental Rights Agency of the European Union (FRA) published a number of significant reports and survey results on discrimination toward vulnerable groups in Europe, including women, Roma, Jews and members of the LGBT community. The results of these surveys, deeply important in themselves, can provide an invaluable basis for pursuing concrete action to advance fundamental human rights in Europe.

Humanity in Action sought to convert research and survey data into local projects developed by members of the Humanity in Action community. Specifically, Humanity in Action looked for project proposals that address two issues highlighted in the FRA’s reports: discrimination against Roma and Antisemitism.

The goal was to develop a series of innovative responses that work towards solutions, especially among younger generations, to the troubling trends of growing prejudice, intolerance and discrimination identified in the FRA surveys.

Humanity in Action Senior Fellows are informed and motivated agents of change who implemented local projects that addressed these discrimination issues by:

• Raising awareness
• Educating
• Cooperating with and empowering Roma and Jewish communities
• Actively working against discriminatory practices towards Roma and Jews among other minority and majority populations

This grant competition aimed to empower Senior Fellows to create projects that embody the educational mission of Humanity in Action and increase cooperation among Senior Fellows from different countries.

The specific goals included:

• Encourage the Senior Fellows community to take action that promotes human rights, diversity and active citizenship;
• Increase cooperation and the exchange of knowledge within the international Senior Fellows Network;
• Explore issues and topics that are new or less familiar to Humanity in Action and
• Inspire others to action
