Nina Siegal is an author and New York Times journalist, who has written three novels and thousands of newspaper and magazine articles. She is currently working on a nonfiction book about World War II diaries.
Siegal has long history of covering social justice issues, including mass incarceration in the U.S., domestic violence and housing issues for underserved communities. She brings that framework to covering issues in the arts, culture, society and history.
In 2021, Nina was one of the winners of the Whiting Foundation Creative Nonfiction Grant for her forthcoming book, The Diary Keepers.
Originally from New York, Siegal has lived in San Francisco and Iowa, and now lives in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, a base from which she covers European culture. Siegal received her B.A. from Cornell University (1991) and her M.F.A. in Fiction from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop (2006). Her work has appeared in the Wall Street Journal, The Progressive, The Economist, Ms. Magazine, Artsy and Artnet. In 2006, Siegal received a Fulbright Fellowship to research her second novel, The Anatomy Lesson (Nan A. Talese/Doubleday, 2014) in Amsterdam, and stayed.
