Towards an Anti-Racist Community

Article

With this pilot project, Amiirah seeks to build a sustainable community of critical anti-racist activists and expert trainers leading the way in affecting positive structural change and building cohesion in Finnish society.

For Amiirah’s project, she is developing a training for trainers program to build the capacity for critical anti-racist work and to create a sustainable community of anti-racist activists in Finland. After the global racial awakenings stemming from the Black Lives Matter movement in the US in 2020, much still needs to be done concerning critical anti-racist work beyond diversity and inclusion initiatives. While they may share common experiences, not all racialised minorities have the critical tools for analytical anti-racist knowledge. Those who do have the knowledge may not have the pedagogical or facilitation skills to impart that wisdom effectively.

Amiirah’s Ambitions

Together with the Anti-Racist Forum, Amiirah will train a group of racialised minorities in Finland with the necessary critical knowledge, pedagogical tools, and facilitation skills to become anti-racist expert trainers themselves. The training would include:
  • participatory knowledge-building online sessions,
  • a residential training,
  • and culminate in a workshop on anti-racism facilitated by the trainees.
This would allow them to demonstrate and practice their actionable skills. With this pilot project, Amiirah seeks to build a sustainable community of critical anti-racist activists and expert trainers leading the way in affecting positive structural change and building cohesion in Finnish society.
