Landecker Fellow Iason Apostolopoulos was a panelist on the webinar titled “A Crisis Within a Crisis; Refugees facing Covid-19” alongside Dr. Roger Zetter, Emeritus Professor of Refugee Studies at the University of Oxford, and Reshad Jalali, Policy Officer at the European Council on Refugees and Exiles. Iason is the Rescue Team Coordinator of “Mediterranea Saving Humans,” an Italian Association that is active in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The organization works to rescue refugees on shipwrecks since there is a lack of government and international aid. It also works to educate the public about the issues with current European immigration policies. During the panel, he discussed how the COVID-19 pandemic further complicated the already difficult rescue operations. Watch the webinar here. Read about Mediterranea here.
Iason is one of thirty Alfred Landecker fellows. This fellowship, a collaboration between the Alfred Landecker Foundation and Humanity in Action, was created to strengthen a new generation of leaders whose approaches to political and social challenges can become catalysts for democratic placemaking and community building.
