David Peyton


David Peyton works in the Office of Foreign Assets Control at the U.S. Treasury Department. He was previously a Donald R. Beall Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Defense Analysis at the Naval Postgraduate School and doctoral research fellow at the Paris Institute of Political Studies (Sciences Po). He received his Ph.D. from the department of political science at Northwestern University, where he studied peacekeeping, foreign assistance, and economic development in postcolonial states. His doctoral research took a special interest in the strategies that conflict-affected populations deploy to cope with the consequences of state weakness. This topic was analyzed using data that David gathered over the course of twenty months in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he was a research affiliate at the Université Libre des Pays des Grands Lacs.

Prior to beginning his doctoral studies, David worked at the Africa Center for Strategic Studies in Washington, DC and served as an HIA-Tom Lantos Congressional Fellow in the Office of Congressman Tom Perriello. He also worked as a research associate at Urwego Bank in Kigali, Rwanda, where he conducted market research on small and medium-sized enterprises in Africa’s Great Lakes Region. David received his bachelor’s degree in International Relations from Wheaton College.
