Project Overview
This project aims to create a Romani language dictionary with translations into the BHS languages (Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian) to address the need for better awareness among the Bosnian population about the Romani community’s language, culture, and societal position. By developing this dictionary, EDVACAY Fellows Božica Mlađenović, Ejub Hadžić, Maja Lukić, and Sreten Milutinović, intend to document basic words from the Romani language alongside their BHS translations. Each letter of the alphabet will be accompanied by words in both languages and include relevant information, facts, or data 
about the Romani population in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Project Justification
The lack of public awareness in Bosnia and Herzegovina regarding the Romani language and culture has prompted the development of this project. The dictionary will provide a foundational resource for understanding the language used by the largest national minority in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This resource will be of long-term value, with applications across various sectors in the country.
The Roma people, the largest national minority in Bosnia and Herzegovina, have historically faced significant discrimination, stereotypes, and prejudices. Despite their rich cultural heritage, the Roma community often encounters barriers to social, economic, and educational opportunities. This project seeks to challenge these negative perceptions by promoting a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Romani language and culture, thereby contributing to the broader goal of social inclusion and equality.
Project Objectives:
- Create the first Bosnian dictionary of the Romani language.
- Increase public awareness of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s national diversity, particularly the Romani language and culture.
- Foster the inclusion of the Romani community, the largest national minority in Bosnia and Herzegovina, through language learning.
The Romani dictionary project aims to preserve and promote the Romani language and culture by documenting basic words and expressions. This concise dictionary will serve as a valuable resource for anyone interested in learning the fundamentals of the Romani language and incorporating it into their daily lives. The dictionary will be available in both digital and printed formats, ensuring broad accessibility and usability.
