We thank the members of our Admissions Committee for the Landecker Democracy Fellowship 2020/21. From August 3 to September 28, 2020 members of the Admissions Committee read over 260 applications and interviewed more than 90 finalists.
We could not have done this without their support. The process of evaluating such a high number of strong and compelling applications was challenging and intense. In many cases, it was small nuances that significantly affected the Admissions Committee’s choices of finalists. We look forward to soon introducing an incredible first cohort of Fellows for the Landecker Democracy Fellowship Program.

extremism and foster pluralism.","_subtitle":"field_5c6e16acaedc5","introduction":"Humanity in Action gave Senior Fellow Beth Goldberg lessons of what societies should or should not do to reconcile grievances and transcend violent conflicts.","_introduction":"field_5c6e18d9aedc8","body":"Humanity in Action was the experience that confirmed for Beth that a career fighting for democratic rights would motivate her to jump out of bed every morning. The Humanity in Action community has served as inspiration and ethical guideposts as she explored how to advocate most effectively across human rights non-profits, journalism and, most recently, the tech industry, where she researches hate speech and radicalization. In each path, Beth has felt buoyed knowing an international community of advocates is not far away, fighting complementary, interdependent fights.\u00a0 Beth applied to Humanity in Action as an opportunity to learn comparatively about European post-conflict experiences. Beth explained that\r\n\r\n[perfectpullquote align=\"left\" bordertop=\"false\" cite=\"\" link=\"\" color=\"\" class=\"\" size=\"\"]\u201cRather than through more tired European history classes, Humanity in Action took an immersive approach to learning.\u201d [\/perfectpullquote]\r\n\r\nAs the descendent of persecuted German Jews, Beth wanted to better understand how policies and cultures had developed in the aftermath of World War II to prevent another genocide, and yet simultaneously foster the resurgent far right. She had spent the prior four years studying conflicts in Africa and the Middle East, so Beth was excited that Humanity in Action offered a critical, comparative lens to question the textbook \u201csuccess story\u201d of Germany for building a pluralistic democracy post-conflict. Beth can recall a formative moment early in her Fellowship where a speaker asked each Fellow to recall a pivotal political event that affected their lives. For Beth, the answer was immediate and emotional: 9\/11. She described that\r\n\r\n[perfectpullquote align=\"left\" bordertop=\"false\" cite=\"\" link=\"\" color=\"\" class=\"\" size=\"\"]\u201cEvery single other American had the same answer. I then listened to my new friends from Bosnia, Ukraine, Germany, and elsewhere describe political events with equally vivid, evocative memories, which had only crossed my radar as headlines. I have never more keenly felt the significance of geography and memory in the shaping of political cultures and identities.\u201d[\/perfectpullquote]\r\n\r\nBeth is grateful for the deep and broad Humanity in Action network that helped her discover her first full-time role. Beth on a panel at Yale[\/caption]\r\n\r\nAs a research associate, Beth got to support local advocates for legal accountability in nine emerging democracies, from farmers fighting for land rights in Sierra Leone to Indian fishermen seeking environmental justice. This propelled Beth in pursuit of answers about how effective international development efforts were at strengthening democracy, and in a post-Arab Uprising world, what role the Internet could play.\r\n\r\n[perfectpullquote align=\"right\" bordertop=\"false\" cite=\"\" link=\"\" color=\"\" class=\"\" size=\"\"]Humanity in Action offered a critical, comparative lens to question the textbook \u201csuccess story\u201d of Germany for building pluralistic democracy post-conflict. [\/perfectpullquote]\r\n\r\nTo start answering these questions, Beth went to Liberia where she worked with USAID and Accountability Lab on initiatives to increase civic participation and Internet access. To dig deeper into how the Internet could influence democracy, Beth went to graduate school. At Yale, she pursued a joint Masters degree in Internet Governance and an MBA focused on technology policy. She worked as a Fellow at the Yale Information Society Project to research how technology companies evolved to \u201cgovern\u201d speech online. She also had the opportunity to organize a policy trip for 50 of her fellow graduate students through Israel and Palestine, turning to the Humanity in Action model for inspiration.\r\n\r\n

Executive Director Judith Goldstein with civil rights icon John Lewis[\/caption]\r\n\r\nJudith worked as the Executive Director of Thanks To Scandinavia, started by the Danish pianist Victor Borge to acknowledge Scandinavians who resisted Nazism and protected Jews during the Second World War. In 1997, Judith founded Humanity in Action and has served as its Executive Director ever since. Programs have included fellowships and internships in Europe and the United States, annual publications, photography exhibitions, films, and conferences. Over 26 years the organization has engaged over 2,750 college and university students in its programs and raised over $31 million.\r\n\r\nJudith serves on the Board of the The Frances Perkins Foundation and the Somes Pond Center, and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.\r\n\r\nShe sustains an abiding interest in conservation and landscape design and history, especially as it relates to Maine and Mt. Desert Island.\r\n
